PvP and Amps

We know that armour works like this:


Example 1:
Mob A: 30 IMPACT

vs.

Ghost armour: 19 IMPACT, 11 ELECTRIC


The mob does between 15 and 30 dmg, and 19 of them are absorbed by the ghost armour, means we will see hits from 1.0 - 11.0.

Example 2:
Mob B: 20 IMPACT, 10 ELECTRIC

vs.

Ghost armour: 19 IMPACT, 11 ELECTRIC

All damage types the mob causes are taken into account, therefor the ghost armour absorbs 19 + 11 = 30, means we will see only 1.0 hits.






Now, how this is in PvP?

Example 3:
Isis LR 59 (L): 99 BURN

vs.

Hermes (L): 45 PENETRATION, 45 BURN

Only damage type absorbed by the armour is BURN, so we should see hits ranging from 4.5 - 54.





But what happens if we add an amp to the Isis?


Example 4:
Isis LR 59 (L) with attached Omegaton A104: 2 PENETRATION, 12+99 BURN

vs.

Hermes (L): 45 PENETRATION, 45 BURN

The 2 PENETRATION damage should make the armour absorb both, 45 PENETRATION plus 45 BURN = 90 dmg total.
(because this is how it should work for mobs)


If this is really the case, we should only see hits ranging from 1.0 - 23.0, meaning the effective damage was LOWERED significantly by attaching an amp!!!




From what i've seen it doesn't work this way for PvP, but...
Has anyone ever TESTED this???

(and please, keep this thread clean, if you haven't read Jimmy Bs thread on "How armour works", meanwhile part of PCF, you will probably not even know why Example 2 works like it was outlined above)

Very good question. This could easily be tested with:
  • cheap LRxx(L)
  • A104
  • vigi
  • ingame friend
  • Any place in Amethera 100 meters from TP

Do 20 shots without the amp, noting dmg amount and location hit (check decay each hit)

Then repair the armor back to full, stick on the amp, and repeat the 20 shots.

If there is significant reduction in the avg. dmg. on the 2nd instead of an increase, then you know.

However, I'm guessing that the numbers will show that the leftover Pen dmg won't apply to the Burn, as we would expect. Then again, I've been wrong plenty of times before, so...

No, the Hermes absorbs 2 Penetration and 45 Burn.

Maybe you should read it again. In your example 2 the armour absorbs a maximum of 29, not 30.

Well, i did, and it seems my memory tricked me a bit...
what Jimmy B wrote was mainly about plates in combination with armour.

However, what it did state was that "the full damage is presented to the armour":


This allows the assumption i made above. (1 PENE is enough to activate the full PENE protection)
This also allows the assumption that it works the way you described it.
(each damage type is handled separately)


Now we just need someone to confirm it, so the question remains:

Has someone tested this?


I am willing to play the target in vigi, but i need someone to bring a "burn only" gun and a laser amp (>A102) - i, for one, am trying to stay away from (L) as far as i can (ok, not 100% true, i do use (L) mining equipment)

You've got it all wrong..

Say the weapon does 2 pene, 100 burn.

You've got an armour that does 45 pene/45 burn, and a plate that does 10 pene/10 burn.

The armour will absorb 2 pene 45 burn, the plate will absorb 2 pene, 10 burn, for a total of 49..

But that'd be a total absorbed damage of 4 pene (& 45 burn), that's 2 more pene than the weapon causes...

Pure empirical reasoning works pretty good as well.
For instance, put on a set of thunderbird and hunt a sumima. It damn well won't be doing 50% of it's initial damage.
