What happened to water mining?

As a fairly new Entropian who did his homework, I read in more than one place that mining probes could be dropped in water up to waist deep, and that claims could be mined even if they were found in deeper water. In my own experience, I have been unable to drop probes in water that comes up to my toenails, and many probe drops near the water's edge have yielded zero claims. I asked around in-game, and came to the understanding that yes, mining in the water used to be possible; and no, it's not possible now. Is this another feature that was lost with the CryTek2 engine changeover, and is there any plan to bring it back?
