item Decay question

I am getting tired of running around with no cloths. So I'd like to invest in some basic cloths at the very least. But given how fast my starter rags lasted before they where useless. (less then 24 hours with no combat) Im concerned about cost. Everything seems so expensive in this world. I am reluctant to buy anything. doubly so given how fast things seem to decay.

If I where to break down and buy some basic outfit for use around town and while im not getting chewed on, how long would they last before i have to replace them?

I am scouting this world out for some friends to see if its worth our attention but Im not getting a positive feeling here. I love the idea! It reminds me of an old game i use to love to spend my time in. But aside from a great look and theme, I am having a hard time finding ways to pitch the game to my friends to make them interested. The Cost just seems too high. Am I wrong? am i missing something? Is it not as bad as it seems?

Hello, welcome to the game

As far as I've experienced, the clothes I have been using since 2008 is still not broken, although they lose 1 PEC (0.01 PED) each time you take them off (or on). I am not 100% sure if they lose value when getting attacked / chewed on.

The clothes themself is 'cheap' depending on what color and what type of 'brand' the clothing is.

Your 'starter rags' can be repaired. You don't have to repair them completely, just enough to put them back on.

After that they won't decay unless you take them off and put them on again. It is the act of changing them that causes decay.

I still have my starter clothes from 6 years ago - and they are just fine!

Clothes 'decay' 2pec/item when you put them ON (it's armor that decays 1pec, not clothing). There is no cost when you take them off, nor when hit by mobs or in any other circumstance... just when you put them ON.

The colonist shirt and pants are issued to new players at 0 (zero) TT value, so once removed need to be repaired to at least 3% of their maximum TT value in order to be put back on. Maximum TT value is 1ped/item so that's 3pec / item to repair (3% x 1ped) them to their minimum wearable value.

(3pec = 3 * $1USD/10 / 100 .. so 0.3 US cents.)

If you dont swap clothes around often , and dont wear items that are automatically taken off when wearing armor (this can depend on the armor, but will include shoes, and possibly hats/shades), then the cost of clothing repair is vanishingly small.
