Footguards can't be just greed, if it was just
MA wanting to tie up more peds, I'd be happier if they raised the max TT on my armours with 10%, and next time I go repair them fully they'd get that money.
One way I see footguards, it that it's a concealed way of saying to the players "At next VU, we will take all your helmets and face guards, but don't worry, during this VU you can still use your existing, but don't forget to search for new".
My theory, is that
MA does this to give crafters more work to do. However, as they now like (L) armor and (L) BPs, it will take longer time to make an adequate number of unlimited footguards for the commonly used armors out there (like ghost). Also, while we've had say 4 years or so to fill the "market" with looted armor parts, there will also be a lack of looted armour parts. Even if
MA makes looted footguards drop faster in the beginning, there will probably still be a shortage, because people with say ghost, wanting to have a repairable footguard with stats compatible with the armor, will fight with boar owners over boar footguards (for instance). If a ghost-owner loots a better footguard, "risk" is that they keep the footguard, to be able to continue hunting, at least until ghost footguard reaches the market.
What if
MA starts mass-dropping footguards and footguard BPs? Well, then they have acheived nothing. Except forcing players to wear another item.
What is the risk with implementing footguards? The risk is that players who, when 9.1 is launched, still lacks decent footguards find it much harder to get into situations where two big troxes or neconu attack at same time, and relatively often (together say one hit out of five) will make hits that you have to start fapping for life, and meanwhile the armor will decay of course. Those players, like me who use armor to hunt mobs that would kill us if we didn't wear armour, are likely to either leave, or reduce the level of activity if we are unable to sustain the equipment to hunt at the level we've always hunted. Another issue is plate price. As long as it's relatively stable it's ok, but if higher plates rush in price, it can make an objective to sell the entire set rather than getting the seventh plate.
I'm not quitting yet, since there is no real change until 9.1 is out, I go out hunting with what I got, and what I can get until 9.1 is released.
Besides from the practical hunt side, there is also the "fun factor". For us who has more than one armor, and some of them pretty useless, it will now mean that we suddently will have incomplete sets. For the armours I've got, I've been able to aquire pixie footguards. Goblin: Still haven't seen any (for practical use, though expensive at the moment, there are gremlin footguards). Gnome: There neither, but I'd expect it from beacon missions. Valiant: I've seen a global for the (limited) BP, but still no valiant footguards on auction. Bodyguard: Have seen BP for limited footguards, but didn't want to engage in bid-war as for me it's just fun. Haven't seen anything about unlimited footguards. Hunter: I've hunted the most likely mobs to drop them (calas), gotten 11 hair color sets (I've hunted all calas), but no trace of hunter foot guards. Ghost: I've seen one set of footguards on aution. It apparently went for TT+385, in the neighbourhood of what I paid for my entire ghost set when I got it.
Crafting: Until version 9.0, I had a complete set of unlimited blueprints for bodyguard armor. It's a crap armor, but I was able to make me a set. Now, since VU 9.0, I lack one BP for it (guess which). For me, this amor was just a fun factor. It has virtually no protection, but it was fun to be able to create a full armor set. Now, even though I still got 6 BPs, since it's no set, it's no fun anymore, and the BPs are virtually worthless.
