I don't think if you do <50% of the damage it would count as a kill. There is a marker on dead mobs that indicates who did most damage, i.e. who can loot it, and this marker points to a player or team. Who fired the kill shot is probably not even information that is normally kept since it means nothing, so I'd doubt they could determine kills by kill shots.
