Hmm, I remember there were less people helping out in my time as well.
People at my soc were (and still are) quite helpful, though.
Unfortunately, I pressed "Accept" when someone proposed himself as a mentor. He was so kind that I didn't want to offend him by saying "no" and later on by "kicking" him. But, I was determined not to follow the traditional career path and, to this day, my mentor is stuck with a disciple that may never graduate.
Dear n00b, don't make the same mistake as I did!
Talk with your mentor about all the topics you can think of.
If he doesn't satisfy your curiosity or seems unprepared,
tell him that you need a more thorough mentor.
If he's got enough maturity, he'll understand.
