That's pretty realistic to be conned by the mentor... and the follow hunter method of sweating has been around (as you have guessed), although I have not considered the very valid new hunter option because of the situation that usually puts me under. I'm glad you discovered it now though too and yes I also learnt to ask for permission because while some people don't seem to mind, enough don't like it. I still much prefer the larger mobs and their hunters because of the location, usually less crowds, but sometimes though I get someone thats really nice and will take a few more attacks while I finish up my sweat attempts.
(p.s. there are also obviously many variations of this which will break up the "tedium of sweating" and make it a delightful experience)
