Im not an economic, but it sounds reasonable right. 
As a side note, I apologize for simplistic reply i gave earlier. What i ment were the things i have noted above.

They also went to conventions, sponsored a LA for the MMOWC etcetc lots of examples which also costs money, the "financial" idea is to show good will to the community hopefully making people happy=>tell others about
PE/
EU=>More people ingame depositing + the ones already ingame being happier and depositing more.
And maybe because
MA wants to support a LAN that supports
MA with quite alot of money through pktournaments and all the other events happening there, with alot of people locked up playing their computer for 4 days straight
I know several that attend every year and trust me they dont run around ingame shooting opalos to save cash...
And maybe, just maybe because they want to give something back to some of the more dedicated people in the community to be nice? (its a bit out there i know, but could be true?
Besides like Sirre said im pretty sure it wont hurt the "lootpool" the least, one reason is that the money theyre putting towards this is probably a piss in the ocean compared to whats spent ingame (and like i said also compared to what is spent during the actual LAN with people playing harder than they usually do and care less about losses), but also since its probably coming from some form of separate "account" already made towards promotions/advertizing so if not spent on this LAN it would probably have been spent on some "out of game" thing anyway
