i expect you mean china by "those", but its all over the world. anywhere you employ cheap labour there is scope for corruption and if you make a product the locals cant afford there's incentive and less moral objection. im pretty certain i heard of this years ago with the driver software for a camera or somthing.

i wouldnt say unfounded at all. Im watching a series about counterfeit goods, everything from nike trainers, to gucci bags, to viagra and even proper medical pharmacueticals. the Chinese themselves reckon some staggering number (i dont recall it) die from dodgy drugs on the market there, so they are taking it quite seriously. the problem is basically poor security and corruption at the plants in China. The multi-nations involved dont want to talk about it or admit theres a problem, because they dont want to upset the Chinese. they know its happening and also know that most of the "counterfeit" product is probably coming out of their own factories. they'd rather target the middle men and street hawkers.
meanwhile the goods we purcahse in the shops in the west have never been cheaper while our financial markets demand increased revenue growth every quater from the manufacturers. it really is all our own fault at the end of the day.
