Apart from good reminders of our own newbie days and that a little help at that stage is a good thing to be offered, something pretty important has been very well highlighted here for MA to see...the mentor system could and (probably does) piss new guys off rather than help them when it's abused in this way. The whole point of it is to encourage and help, yet some people rely on kindness shown by others instead of their supposed mentor to get by at the hardest point for a n00b. If no contact is made for a period, maybe over the initial 2 days...mentorship should be automatically open to termination by the disciple to stop them being stuck as Pinky is/was with a farmer.

MA definitely needs to do something about the mentor system, as it is now, it's far too easily abused. When I started a couple of months ago I was almost immediately farmed. My 'mentor' didn't even bother to speak to me at all, not even a quick hello, she just sent me the invite and moved on to the next newbie. Luckily I realised early enough that this person would be no help to me and kicked her in time, but there must be so many new players who get stuck with useless mentors simply because they don't realise what they need to do before it's too late. Perhaps
MA, instead of advising newbies to go to the oil rig when they first sign in, can give them a quick guide to finding a real mentor?
Anyway, great post Pinky, have really enjoyed this series so far, can't wait to read the next one!
