It is just luck.
Because I got a 600Ped HOF of OIL in my FIRST WEEK of playing.
Some people just get lucky, plain and simple . Although with mining, it's also partly intuition and smarts of where to mine.

Same goes for hunting. I have been hunting for 400-1200 ped ammo every day since 1 jan 2008 and during this time I have lost around 120 ped. Less after I get some rare stackables sold because then I might well be floating at around +/- 0. And if I wanted to sell the skills... woooa... Skyrocketing into profit.
400 ped ammo use to end up in 200 ped decay (using an A106 amp) on armor, amp and weapon which makes each hunt a 600 ped project in total. That means 600 - 1800 ped money spent on hunting each day.
120 ped (as it stands before sales now) / 75 = around 1.5 ped / day. So even if I am not profiting (depending if you take skills into account or not) I am definitely enjoying a cheap play of
PE
Using the right armor, the right weapon and hunting the right mob is a winning combination.
And I want to thank
MA for the (L) weapons because they have made my skilling and
PE playing possible in a fun way.
And no, I don't use mod fap or any of those luxuries.
Either way, you can make a solid play on hunting if you do it right too. So that covers both mining and hunting.
Don't know how craftig is though since I dont want to try economic suicide. Hahaha. Ehm...
Sorry. A tad off topic. Just wanted to make sure mining wasn't seen as the only profitable profession as it is not :P
But yes, luck is a big factor but not the most important
