I don't think general beginners place orders - it took me about a year or so, when someone told me what had heppen, when suddently something I put on aution got sold within a split second.

I think most people do want to try different things. The option to craft using the stuff they loot themselves, would typically be to first sell stuff they looted, and then buy it again to start crafting. Unfortunately it is kind of expensive, the markup when buying smaller (say less than 100 ped) batches of material can sometime be pretty costly.
As for crafting for trade terminal, even items above basic filters (like jester D1, breer p1 or basic pattern pants), is because you hope to get a useful blueprint (a blueprint for an item that you can actually sell or use yourself). And, meanwhile, get skills to be abe to use the blueprint with bigger success (hopefully).

It's hard to sell let's say animal oils, worth 102%, at exactly price on auction. If you have 50.3 ped of animal oils, you have the option of either sell it for 51 ped or 52 ped (or even 50 ped). If you sell it for 52 ped, your price will be way above markey value (relative), and way below if you sell for 51 ped. Hence, it really doesn't matter - especially if you know it will get returned to you in a week if noone wanted it at 103%. Then you just lost the auction fee.

After each hunt, I am broke, in terms of PEDs. I usually return with a mixture of wool, generic hides, extractors and a few caldorite stones. To be able to hunt again, I *will* need to sell something, and that relatievely fast.
Some people might have assets worth say 40k ped they can liquidate easily - not so with me. I typically have less than a PED on my PED card, and my storage is full of misc stuff (no, I don't TT *everything*). Though, at my level I don't have cash to keep me up for a week while I sell things the proper way. And, when I feel bored and if I haved a real bad hunt, I might craft up some of my looted materials, and at the end of my crafting session, I'd like to get some cash so I can try some more hunting or maybe mine instead.
Or, as seen from another perspective: If I hunt with a (L) weapon (250%) and (L) armor (say 200%) instead of crafting with my looted materials, I might lose the same amount of PEDs anyway. And, anotyher way to see it, if I can sell materials cheaper to crafters, they might be able to craft weapons cheaper (well, theoretically in an ideal world).

My problem is typically, when I start to run out of PEDs, that I've had a really bad hunt, with say 30% return. At that point, I have three options. Deposit again (usually a bad idea). Try to make something with the materials I got. Or go sweating. Sweating not to gain sweat but just do something that's free or cheap (this option works for say up to an hour, my computer typically gets lagged pretty quick at sweat camp and neas place).
Oh, yeah, another thing: I hunt for items, something that is fun, and to keep myself, not to sell (and something that will last - not an (L) weapon I'll use up in less than a day). I don't intend to get rich by trading, or to hope for that 1M ped (all oils) ATH. If it's just peds that I should want, I could deposit. Though, I'm pretty aware that the chance to loot something nice (and repairable) these days is close to 0. But I'm a sucker and keep on hunting anyway...
