Making a Name (new player)

i have spent the last 40 minutes designing my character
i had the name all planned out, but they surprised me with this last name and nick name business.
what happens if i don't enter a nick name? i want my guy to go by the first name.
also it's getting late. if i exit the game without figuring this out, will i have to start designing the character all over again?
