I thought it was 3 minutes or so... At least that used to be about right before the last VU. I think now it is somewhere inbetween 1 and 2 minutes.
And to answer the question, I've had the same thing happening. Where you just kill a MOB and lag then catches up with you and suddenly realises the MOB did do some damage after all.
