Buy a decent outfit, anything but orange is fine. A good line is also helpful when you enter the rig-zone, but it might also kill you depending on your reputation. It usually takes some time to get known in the rig-zone, especially if you don't have any good equipment. But it can be done, if you enter the zone at the right time, and meet the right people.

But really its part of a growing phase, even I was noob just 3+ years ago and I was target practice… a lot has changed since then I do admit.
Having good friends also helps a lot too.
Hheheh remembers a time when I was semi skilled and had 10 people bothering me at the rig one day.
I gave Skalman a pm and he came all the way down from cp and we kicked there asses for hours, till they gave up and did not come back
Your skills your friends, how nice you will all are factors latter on.
Especially your reputation that is!
Of course killing a AOA / Artox Prowler Naked, is always a good start to gaining respect at the rig
Maybe even stalker
