I am pretty sure btw the variation is indeed linear btw.(i cant remeber why, i just can remeber i concluded some time ago it was  ).

Yes, in cases where the armor protects most of the damage it would be necessary to take an average across multiple fractions from 0.5 to 1.0 max dmg. I was answering on what constituted average damage for a mob in case that wasn't clear to people.
Some of these wiki calculations are getting rather involved, aren't they?
