1: Range is in meters, and the range of the detector is outward from where it operates, so that makes it a radius. So yes, you need to run twice that distance before you bomb. Personally, if the range is 54.7 then I only run between 100 and 108 or 109 and don't get too worried about the tiny bit of overlap. For how my ava is right now, that is 20 seconds. Of course, if I get overloaded I have to start actually looking at positions because run speed then becomes unpredictable, and that goes the same when mining in hilly or mountainous country.
2: It's more than just veins. There can be more than one type of resource in an area, and only bombing once yields what that bomb picked up. I have found countless claims of other resources by bombing a second time in one spot.
While conventional wisdom says that you find things farther out with successive bombs, I had that theory blown all to hell a while back when something popped up closer than the farthest claim. I've only had it happen that once, and it makes me wonder what the hell I did, but I am calling it a fluke and not something that will likely happen again.
