Security Suggestions

After reading the thread about someone getting “hacked” I thought maybe I should right a little guide to help people keep their computers a little safer. Most importantly for FREE. Maybe some other tech’s can make some suggestions and we can update this.

Please read everyone including people that already know all this stuff cause you could have some better suggestions also.

Anti Virus

AVG Anti Virus

AVG Free by Grisoft

AVG is free and has free updates for life and you should keep it set to automatically check for updates. Personally I’ve tried every anti-virus out there and I find that AVG updates the most (they don’t wait for 10-20 new virus they’ll update if they find one and the update will be even just a couple bytes) but that’s my personal opinion develop your own. Over the years I’ve come to just trust AVG more.

Spyware

I recommend 2 Spyware programs as I’ve found different things with each one.

Adaware SE Personal Edtion by Lavasoft

Spybot - Search & Destroy by Spybot

Firewall

Windows XP SP2 comes with one and if you are running it it probably is already enabled. If not go to Start->Control Panel-> Security Center or Windows Firewall

Zone Alarm by ZoneLabs

They have a couple different ones listed there but Plain Zone Alarm is free

Windows Security

Please read this great article by FireWolf for more info on Windows Security

Your Password

Next is your password you really need to make a unique password that can’t be guessed easily by even a program designed for it. So try and make one like this:

IhlsJ247!

Using both lower and uppercase letters numbers and even a special character can help. (I’m actually not sure if PE will let you use special characters but I made this document to apply for everything like your email password)

How to Remember

Now good passwords like the above are hard to remember usually but I have a sort of trick.

Code:

I hate lame scammer Jerks Twenty Four Seven! 
I h    l    s       J     2      4    7    !

So make up a sentence that will include numbers in it use dates times or parts of phone numbers something you can remember but wont make any sense to anyone else when broken down like the above.

Gold Card

Now doing all the above still doesn’t ultimately stop someone from messing with your account. Personally I could loose everything I had in PE and I wouldn’t be upset to much and could by it all back at not much cost. But if you have items that are worth $100’s of US I really recommend spending the $20 US, as it makes it impossible to log in without that physical card.

Am I the only one to think Microsoft's Anti Spyware proggie is a brilliant piece of software?

I can't wait for them to start offering anti-virus kits as well. Cause Norton sucks balls.

also with the MS spyware program it's still in Beta from what i found from the site:

Initially there were plans to make people pay for it, but they were dropped
