what gets me is why they felt the need to change to the cry2 engine when they hadn't even reached close to the full potential of the gamebryo engine. i've got a demo of it and i can't believe that they didn't at least give it a better go than they have. it certainly would have allowed more people to stay "high end" for longer and continue to enjoy PE until they could afford to update like some of us can/have already.
Graphics are nice to look at, but i'm sure at least some of us still remember that playability is the key...i mean pacman didn't look that flash, but how popular was that? and for how long??? |

I voted No.
The reason for this is simple. The computer industry is forever moving forward. Operating Systems, Applications and Media are all requiring more and more processing grunt. For EU to support a dwindling number of users with a legacy cut down client that will require parallel development each time some new feature is added just does not make any business sense whatsoever. Most people within EU will at some point or other in time, upgrade their machine either via component piece parts or by replacing their whole system with a new machine. Therefore, if most upgrade or follow some bare minimum upgrade path, then why would any software vendor keep supporting the minority. When parts on your old ailing machine finally break you will be left in the position of having to upgrade to a varying degree anyway. Upgrading your machine between now and CryEngine2 release will see you enjoying Entropia for a number of years to come. I severely doubt that MindArk will need to or even want to change the engine a second time within 4 years. I don't know what the typical 'life' of a PC or Laptop is statistically these days but I'd hazard a guess that 4-5 years is the norm for most folks. While my opinion can't be taken as fact, I do believe that the Entropia Environment will not be as comprehensive as Crysis is, and will therefore run more smoothly on lower ability machines compared to Crysis. This is just a guess at this time. Things like blades of grass over the terrain (while optimised well in the Engine anyway) should be a configurable option that participants should be able to turn off to enhance the performance of their experience. I believe a number of people have been quite surprised by the Crysis Demo's ability to run on their lesser machines. Anyhow, this is just my opinion having worked in the IT industry for over 10 years and been an avid gamer for longer than that! We will of course have to wait and see what the actual implementation for Entropia Universe runs like but in my opinion, a reasonable system with the graphics grunt to run CryEngine2 is pretty damned affordable right now, and will be more affordable next year by the time the Engine is released (unless it's delayed of course.) |

Not everyone can afford to keep buying new computers every few years. I have a Athlon 2200+ with 1gig ram and Geforce ti4600 and it will likely be years before I can replace or upgrade it. It runs fine and can do really good graphics. Why should I be bard not just from new games but even the ones I already play just because someone else has lots of money for toys? Stinks of discrimination to me.

I said yes -
A little bit offtopic: Wold3d, Spear of destiny, Doom, DukeNukem are the best games I have ever plaid. At the time I was awed by graphics. After that there is just more shiny details like brains splattering on the wall - OK looks nice, but does it help the gameplay? I. |

hmm.. I'm pretty sure well be able to control more things with Crytek Engine.
Supporting a completely different application may reduce loot, so I'm not quite sure if that'd be a good thing. ) but, maybe an ability to set a threshold on when the textures/models/and all other fancy things switch to hiRez would be quite handy and may also reduce servers bandwith/lags. and as for me, when I'm looking at something, I want it to look pretty. ) -rus |
