HTML table or some other way of specifying rows and cells, I assume.

Yep, exactly, I have this BBCode on a forum using phpbb and its very great, you can change border color, border size...etc...like html :P

I have yet to find a properly working table BB code that ensures that all table tags are properly closed. Without that, a table BB code can very easily break the forum page layouts, which uses lots of nested tables to display threads and posts.

Wouldn't it be relatively simple to write your own BBCode validation widget, and only convert to html if everything is properly closed?

Hmm... "Relatively simple". Ok, not exactly a 30 minutes task I guess. But still.
