besides the parties in the chatlog were victims of the real scammer. a third avatar wracked up a pile of debt and screwed the soc he was in and the people that he knew. the worst part about it, the third avatar was purchased anyway and the new owner was using the old owners connections for the scam. i think the fellow keeping the soc's items was in the right place and besides wasn't this WAY old news? MOVE ON

While naming of newbie scammers made no sense, since the newbies rarely read here before joining EU, and because these scammers avatars was usually newbies themselfes and therefore easily replaced.
I think that there are a couple of cases in which it would be good for the community, to be allowed to read about named individuals. These cases are the so-called 'trust scams' performed be semi- or even wellknown avatars. We all know how they work: Medium/Vet avatar joins a new soc, makes friends, borrows equipment, hands it back, borrows more expensive equipment (repeat X times), suddenly decides to keep it all and leave the soc. To be able to carry out such a scam, the scammer needs to invest a lot of time building both skills/equipment and reputation. In these cases the community should know the name of the scammer, so the scammer avatar will at least never gain trust again. I do however understant your need to keep EF 'clean'... But maybe in such special cases as mentioned above, permission to name the scammers can be given by the moderators? |

I see the thread in question is back in the archived section. Well done 711.
I have no problems with threads like that not being there, as long as the rule is applied consistently. If you remove it, as you are perfectly entitled to do, you need to remove quite a few others, to apply the rule in a fair manner. Don't get me wrong. I do have problems with a scamming section and can see that reputations etc can be slandered very easily and erroneously at times for malicious purposes. I realise that there is a need for a "shout out" at times amongst the community regarding trust scams that involve items worth many peds. And I feel that EF is a powerful tool in halting the spree of a bad egg. For this reason Ef plays a valuable role. I am not sure what the answer to this conundrum is. I would have said that maybe a post moderated section would do for these big Trust scams. A member posts their information, and supporting data etc. A moderator decides if the post is complete and relevant, then it gets posted. The problem with this is that it places a huge burden on the Mods and they cannot be strictly impartial (as has been demonstrated) It would not be fair on them, they are players of the game too. So, EF either allows all and subject it to moderation, as it was. Or removes all scamming threads completely. I would hope that all news and "heads up" of scams do not get removed or curtailed, as I feel EF can play a big role in stopping some scams. Hmmm, a difficult thing 711 and MB etc. There must be some halfway point in this....... |

Again, the best recourse for anyone who feels they have been scammed is to file a support case. EF is not an official EU support site, so not much can be done about real scammers here anyway. The compromise of informing other EF members of scamming methods, rather than accusations of people is the best one, in my opinion. |

I understand where your coming from 711 and do understand that their might be legal issues if you allow a named scamming section to be held on EF.
I don’t believe you, when you say you have a lack of resources to handle a section like this. But might be unwilling to risk legal action against EF because of the section. At worse an issue on [Unnamed site] has reported some bad publicity to one of your own society members. But in many regards being able to name a scammer or other bad person in EF empowers the EF community to be able to punish that person. Yes it is a mob, but since EU (MA) does not take an active role in such things I would prefer having a mob to having nothing! I think this is a viable tool taken away from the community, and just allows scammers or other wise bad people to get away with things. Since the naming shaming section has been removed I have had to turn to such sites as [Unnamed site] to find out the real EU dirt ![]() Last edited by Nicole; 12-24-2006 at 11:53. Then a person can post something there like this without the fear of moderation or having it deleted?
http://www.entropiaforum.com/forums/...89&postcount=1 Not being a smart a$$, I am curious as to what others see as free speech on forums. |

So the EF scamming policy has changed from "support warning scams" to "completely ignore scams"? And I care less about free speach, my dog has free speach, and that doesnt help him with anything at all. I just care about the utility found in this forum, wich has now been reduced.
