In days gone by back on Earth, there was organized sport. Individuals and teams would compete in competitions designed to test who had the greatest athleticism, the greatest skill, the greatest passion. At the highest level, entire nations would be represented by the entrants and millions of people would watch from all over the globe. There was the Olympics, in which the top athletes in the world would compete in all manner of disciplines to determine who was the fastest, the strongest, the fittest. And there was the World Cup in which teams would compete to find out which country was the best at kicking a ball! The colonists on Calypso didn't have time for such frivolities. Trying to prosper in the harsh environment, exploring the new terrain, defending their settlements from attacking bots, feffoids and mutants took up all of the colonists' time. And yet they yearned for entertainment, for competition, and they looked back wistfully at their Earth heritage. And then came Hurrikane, Oscar Hurrikane SkyQuake to be exact. He came with guns. He came with ammo. He organized Festivals of Firepower and the people rallied behind him. Once every month or two, they would drop all their activities and go hunt together. They would fell huge monsters in search not of vast riches but of fun! And they would have fun and make merry, and for one day, forget about the threats faced by the colonists. But soon it was not enough. The colonists wanted to know who was best! They wanted competition! And so, the World of Firepower event was born. Remembering their old Earth origins, the colonists grouped themselves into teams representing the old Earth countries where their ancestors had lived. Nations were represented from Canada to Australia, from Sweden to Zimbabwe. Colonists who no longer felt any attachment to the old Earth countries chose instead to represent continents on Calypso - Amethera and Eudoria. In total, over 200 colonists entered the WoF event, representing 28 nations. They went out into the wilderness, and they hunted. It was not about loot. It was not about PED. It was about entertainment, it was about firepower, it was about glory! The WoF kicked-off in traditional style with an opening ceremony the day before the first round started. Entrants representing the 28 nations turned up to brandish their weapons, explode champagne bottles and set off fireworks to celebrate the event. ![]() The first round of the WoF occurred last weekend. It was a free-for-all hunting of Daikiba, Allophyl, Faucervix and Neconu. Points were scored for each global on any of these mobs and the four lowest scoring teams would be eliminated from the competition. Team Sweden led the round, scoring a total of 70 points, although Team Wales have the highest single loot of the competion so far with a 328 PED Neconu Old. ![]() Zimbabwe, Singapore and Russia have been eliminated from the competition. The qualifying round will be completed when Finland and Serbia, both having originally scored 15 points, take part in a Golden Global tiebreaker at 20:00 on Sunday the 11th. Whichever team hits the first global will progress into the next round, the losing team will be eliminated. The complete results of the first round are: Sweden: 70 points France: 69 points Belgium: 54 points Wales: 53 points ![]() Australia: 53 points England: 50 points Poland: 40 points Estonia: 40 points Germany: 37 points Ireland: 36 points Eudoria: 35 points Scotland: 32 points Netherlands: 31 points Italy: 31 points Greece: 30 points Denmark: 28 points Austria: 24 points South Africa: 20 points Portugal: 20 points Romania: 16 points Canada: 16 points Amethera: 16 points USA: 16 points Serbia: 15 points - tie break Finland: 15 points - tie break Singapore: 5 points - eliminated Zimbabwe: 0 points - eliminated Russia: Non-runner - eliminated The second round will see the teams attempting to get as many globals as possible on Hiryuus, Umbranoids, Calamusoids and Warriors. The location of some of these mobs in PVP1 could be cause for some interesting tactics! The teams are split into 6 leagues of four, each team in a league will play the other 3. The two highest scoring teams in each league will progress to Round 3. We managed to hunt down the WoF tournament organizer Hurrikane who shared some of his thoughts on the event with us: JimmyB: What made you think of organizing the Festival of Firepower and then the WoF? Hurrikane: The FoF (Festival of FirePower) was started to justify buying a big gun, like the Bravo, too early for your skills. In teams of 12, relative noobs with big guns could take down spiders and it grew from there. It was all about "punching above your weight." The numbers grew so the competitive element was added, which made it soc vs soc and gave a new edge. After 9 FoFs, the subject came up on several occasions of an international match, so I posted to see the response...and here we are! JimmyB: Did you expect WoF to get this big? Hurrikane: No, I imagined 8-10 countries, not 28. The big names were another surprise, lots of patriotism amongst the ubers it seems. JimmyB: Give us an estimate of how many globals you reckon will happen in WoF. Hurrikane: All through? Three or Four Hundred. JimmyB: Will someone get an ATH during WoF? Hurrikane: It's common knowledge the biggest mob at the final will be Hogglo, but there's a few on the lists to come that haven't dropped big in a while... so who knows! JimmyB: Who do you fancy to win WoF? Hurrikane: England. JimmyB: Will there be more WoFs? Hurrikane: Every year sounds about right, if I can time my unemployment. ![]() EntropiaForum wishes the best of luck to all teams in the WoF competition. The members of the winning team will each receive a three month Adjusted Membership on EF, as well as all the prestige and glory! Real news.. news that matters. Nice one Jimmy, and very good to see MA giving Hurrikane a nod. Let's hope they see fit to acknowledge his efforts with some tangible in-game reward too.
Looking forward to more of your excellent reportage as the event progresses. |
