Nice one Pinky!
I actually went to the Guides after reading this article (had been meaning to for a while), and also because I had a brainwave while chatting in Argus and a Snable came to the ring. I decided to pay them a visit to tell them my idea: The first thing that new players should learn about is of course their way of making money in EU: Sweating! So I thought why not have a hologram Snable in the New Arrival Zone so that they could learn right away! This lead to a further idea of a New Arrival Playpen, where they could practice their newly learned skills in a non dangerous environment, learning how mobs act and becoming familiar with the wildlife. Anyway, I told Emma this and she said it was noted and she'd mention it in the next meeting she was in! So I hope they'll consider it, and that was very well handled by Emma! |

The angle you point out, where it is used as an insult to people, generally only happens between experienced players insulting each other, but can just as often be used as a decriptive word with no malice behind it. I tried to look up Noob on wikipedia which redirects straight to "Newbie" (both meaning the same thing) and has the following description: Quote:
There are hundreds of words in the dictionary that are insulting to some and not to others. Skating around them all is near impossible. I think in this case you may be a little over sensitive to a pretty tame word than no one else is really too fussed over. I thought it was pretty clear in the article that it was not being used to insult anyone. I hope that explains its inclusion a little better ![]() |

Just in response to this, as well as another poster's comment "every 1 calls noobs, noobs ", I must say that MadMike is not the only one who prefers not to refer to new colonists as noobs. And no poster here can speak for everyone.
This text from further down the page at wikipedia may help clarify an alternative view on the usage of such words. In online gaming, a greater distinction may be made between a "newb" and a "noob." The common consensus is that a "newb" is someone who through their very nature of being a new player is inexperienced and naive to particular gaming mechanics or etiquette, whereas a "noob" is a player that is generally considered to be experienced, yet often makes mistakes or solecisms that would more likely be attributed to a "newb." As I have previously posted, I liked your Guides article very much. I am only posting this now to suggest people often have different opinions on things, which makes EU such a diverse and interesting place to be in. ![]() Respect. |

i for example take offense at people calling things "gay", but i can appreciate the meaning when people use that word to describe something. I dont ask them not to use it because it offends me as i know its simply not offensive to them and millions of other people. I understand that if a post is talking about the latest pink fashion, or someone acting in a silly way, the user of the word Gay is not being disrespectful of gay people, just trying to explain something as being silly, or girly... Bottom line is read how the word that offends you is used in a statement before judging if it was used to offend or attack someone. It is a statement or sentence that should cause offense not one single word (with certain exceptions). e.g. "lol, those pink boots are so gay!" is not meant as an offense to gay people but "Gays should be wiped out" is. Same word, two intents. Hope this makes it clearer. ![]() |
