I'm surprised by this piece of news. Not about any of the numbers - seen them before. I'm more surprised about the fact that this didn't happen earlier!
From MA's point of view, I think this news is a two-edged sword. Sure, they now have it on record that you can spend more in a virtual world in EU than anywhere else. Is that what people really want to hear though? It doesn't necessarily mean that you can MAKE more money than any other virtual world, especially when you consider the amount of investment required to get you to that all-elusive money-making stage. Truth is, the concept of making your living inside a virtual world is still a very young concept. I'd say that the concept of Real Cash Economy-based MMOs has made it's mark upon the world so far about as much as the Internet had in the early nineties. There's still a lot to happen, and it's definitely going to get a lot worse before it gets better. That means that virtual items will at some point grow beyond all reasonable value, and I think the first sign of that is EU. One day there will be an abundance of virtual items for one to spend one's money on, and I think that will define the price. Not to say the current values are wrong necessarily, just that a lot of change will happen before it's any sort of stable market. That's something well beyond MA's control. |

I think the 'turnover' figure is not the amount of money deposited, but the amount traded. I don't think they've ever actually stated how much is deposited per year precisely, even in their end-of-year reports. My memory is foggy on this particular issue though.
However, I've known people who put in over $300 per day, or at least they did for a while. Think that's when you know you're taking it a bit too seriously ![]() |
