Vic Keegan of guardian.com.uk has spoken with Robet Lai (Chief scientist of the Beijing Cyber Recreation District Project) at last weeks Virtual World forum in London.
It seems Lai has brushed off the previously estimates of a world capable of 150m avatars, saying that there are 9 similar virtual universes planned. They are converting a 100 sq km site to house the infrastructure to service.... ..............Wait for it!!! BILLIONS of avatars ![]() The focus will seem to be on offering sales and support for goods that are made in China. China seems to be viewing this alliance with MindArk as a repeat of its world-wide dominance in the manufacturing industry. "...the world's one-stop shop for consumers and producers." says Lai. Gaming got a brief mention in his vision ![]() He is making allowances for major western companies to take advantage of the state-of-the art communications, infrastructure and cheap wages that this project is promising. The Hype coming from Robert Lai is nothing short of colossal... but it does have the weight of CHINA behind it. For those of us that have been around for many years... I am sure you will join me in a quick heads ups on this whole china thing by reading the full article HERE and then get back to business as usual. ![]() Reference: Virtual China looks for real benefits http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...ent.secondlife |

From what I've read it seems rather an assumption that we will in any way interconnect with what is planned for China. It looks to me as if MA are selling their experience in virtual worlds and virtual Marts in particular rather than EU as we see it. This looks more like an on line merchandising scheme for traditional businesses, a way in fact of streamlining interaction between Euro/US companies and Chinese suppliers.
In fact the only connection I see is that we provide MA with the profit to develop this expertise. I doubt any of the profit will re-appear in EU. |

sure billions. even 150 million is a joke. there aren't that many people in the market for this form of entertainment for a long time yet. its that simple.
there is what like 30K active players in EU? thats so far from 1million players its not funny. and every time you have a mere 100 avatars in one place on the server the lag is a joke. EU has some extremely serious scaling problems. And the only technical measure announced in the medium term is a new graphics engine with even more complexity, with no way to reduce the lag. The lag means this world will never scale. until its fixed, sit tight and know that EU won't get much bigger for a while yet. |
