Exploring Alien Lands - Work In Progress

For a project in one of my classes I am going to paint a landscape using photoshop and other raster devices. My goal is to put alot of work into it and share each development stage to this thread. Then I hope to either A.) take the picture to auction to sell it as PC or B.) to see this painting ingame. Either way I hope you (the community) can help me and give me comments/advice along the way.

Here is the description of the project so far:

My proposal is to imagine and paint a foreign planet and where someday man might take up exploring the unknown aspects of life and space. This Alien landscape will include an explorer representing man and his small significance to the alien planet. Native life forms will scavenge the white sandy rocky terrain underneath a blue-green sky. Two moons will overcast the sky and the detail of the moons will be present, illuminated by the blinding star giving bright light to the planet’s surface. Along with man comes his technology, as there will be a piece of equipment the man uses to explore his new found world. All of these images will be sewn together in a random and asymmetrical design that the alien planet represents.

And here are some prelimanary thumbnails for some ideas, it's hard to choose what design I will go with.

Going to do a color composition sketch soon to figure out what color scheme I'm going for next.

Sounds like a great Project.

Personally, I really like your first thumbnail especially if that is a person standing on cliffs / mountains looking over the sea to the horizon with the two moons. I also like 4 as it puts the person in scale compared with the surroundings.

Maybe you could run a poll here, let people vote for their favourite? You could include the results as part of your project submission maybe?

Perhaps for part of your project you could show your painting exhibited in different locations in EU - for example art gallery (used to be one in New Oxford), on an ad screen, in a shop, in an apartment. I am sure you could find some trustworthy people to help.

Just a few thoughts for you, I am sure the community here will have plenty more.

not only deserves a bump but a + rep too, the storyboard is interesting and I look forward to seeing your progress.

For me it's too early for a preference, but you've got a number of good compositions going, keep up the great work.

Thank you for all the comments! It really helps with inspiration. I just recently did a colour composition to test some colour possibilites. Note that this is a colour comp so the perspective and details are wayyyy off. It turned out really bad because I had no colour pencils so I had to use thick oil pastels. Every thing came out strange, so the colour comp is useless, but still required for the project.



Since alot of you like comps 1 and 2 ill try to incorporate some features from them. Such as a long verison line and the layout of the planets. This will happen in my next step which is to start the line work in photoshop.

Oh and I figured that I will indeed buy a picture frame like Voice suggested and will upload the photo and pass it through art galleries if they will accept it, and possible sell the art after it has cycled. Ill need some trust worthy person with an apartment to upload the picture, but this step won't be for another three or four weeks.

I was just thinking, maybe it would be a "unique" for your project if you had screenies or a video of your artwork for sale in the auctions if you sell it that way.

Quick update, got some digital work done. Just really have been working on the sky.
