D E T A I L S
Preliminary In the PICK!ME!UP! Fruit/Stone/Dung Walking Contest I had promised to additionally give away some tickets for an event scheduled through the in-game Event Manager. I said, I would try for an event where even low level participants have a chance to compete, because it obviously makes small sense to give away event tickets to ppl who cannot use them as intended (well, you could always tt or sell them). So, this is it. For me, it’s an opportunity to try out the Event Management system, checking out what works well, what does not––and what doesn’t work at all. There might be some errors and mistakes on my side while running this event, and some misjudgments... plz bear with the r00kie organizer... ![]() Btw, I’m using Oleg’s Event System Guide, which is a great help. ![]() Any other participants are ofc very welcome. ![]() Location Amethera OLA #18 is to the North of Memorial Island TP. It is also reachable from Omegaton West Habitat. However, I usually tp to Memorial Island, run up to the northern shore of the peninsula, and take a short swim. (There may be a few fishies about, so if you are not prepared or able to deal with an occasional RipperSnapper, you’d better make the swim as short and quick as possible. It should be no problem, though.) When a short distance within the OLA boundaries, you can safely press "T" on your keyboard and be transported to the Land Area Marker (*), where you have to register for this event. The coordinates of the Land Area Marker are (22426,35388). Plz bring your stuff already, there is no Service Container at the Memorial Island TP. ![]() Also, there is no Trade Terminal and no Storage Facility at the OLA #18 Land Area Marker. Suitable for Beginners I use the term »beginners« for short when I mean »low lvl participants.« A beginner to me has at least a little experience in-game, some knowledge and a few skills to fall back upon, and some equipment. In case of this event it means that you should be able to kill a Bery Young to participate. If one wants to hold a hunting event suitable for beginners one needs a Land Area with mobs a beginner can kill, and without mobs which are so stong and numerous––or aggro––that a beginner cannot move freely around without getting steam-run over time after time. There are not many LAs around of that kind, because low lvl mobs and middle to low mob densities obviously take something away from the LA’s income (less loot and less hunter interest, which in turn lessen the taxes received––not taking in account lower maintenance cost, however.). In addition to that, even if you do find one LA suitable it is not guaranteed that the LA owner has made public event creating available there. Mobs I’ve now been at two in-game events where we ran out of mobs to kill after about 15-20 min, although the mob density was obviously set to the max. This will always happen, when the mob is too easy to kill and there are some 30+ participants happily blasting away with quite powerful weapons. There is nothing you can do about that. So when you’re featuring mobs suitable for beginners, it is bound to happen. Instead of being at odds with the foreseeable shortage of mobs, let’s make it a part of the contest: Try to find a mob you can kill on that vast Land Area! Or, in other words: Go out there and hunt! For real! ![]() This will be something else than having 50 mobs waiting for you just to be taken out one after the other while you stay comfortably put.––You’ll have to go after your prey. And you’ll have to be smart about it, because other participants will want to go after your mobs, too. ![]() So unless you’re a seasoned and experienced hunter with good gear and knowledge there might be some reconnaissance advisable. If I want to join an in-game event I usually visit the Land Area once before. You can register unhurriedly and then take a good look around: How is the terrain, what mobs are there, how many are there, where are they located? Having gathered that information I think about, how I plan to go about hunting during the event. So, there will be Bery Youngs. There will be other mobs, too. Go, find it out, if you want to know more. Ofc you always can come unprepared. ![]() OLA #18 is so vast that there should always be some mobs around somewhere. To find them, is not a question of how big or small your gun is, how strong or weak your protection is, or how high or low your skill lvls are. Chances Well, nothing is really fair in Entropia, not at all. That’s my experience in my now 10 months of being a colonist on Planet Calypso. There will always be the guys and gals with the higher skills, the better guns, the better amps, and the better »luck« or whatever you may call it, not to forget the bigger PED Card. Because of the game mechanics I cannot even hope to make this––or any contest––fair. What I can try for, however, is, to give everyone a decent chance, even if it be a small one. The first thing is, to make this a hunt not for Most Loot but for Highest Single Loot. So it’s not so much about how big the gun is you bring and how much ammo, but whether you hit the right mob at the right time. You even can have some cost control in this event and just decide e.g., that you’d go after 10 mobs max and either hit it prize-worthy or leave it at that. (You could do some fruit/stone/dung-walking instead. )Another measure to accomplish more fairness is, to give out the biggest prize not for the highest single loot (but, in this case, for the third highest single loot––the in-game Event Manager unfortunately isn’t very versatile when it comes to options ).First, it always seems to be a little wrong––at least to me––, when the ones with the biggest globals (or even HoFs) in addition get the biggest prizes. Seems like a little overkill, and leaves too many ppl out of the picture. (Ofc I would want to acknowledge the biggo with a little something. )Second, there is the problem with the higher mobs, which I consider a serious flaw in the system. Higher mobs are obviously more probable to loot more. The Event Manager, however, offers no option to preclude any mobs. I’ve been to an event that was supposed to be on high Sabas. (It was erroneously advertised as »For beginners«, also, but those beginners who came were eaten alive in the flesh by the Saba Prowlers and Stalkers and had to abandon the contest prematurely. There were also Argo Hunters around, who got the rest. It was quite ugly.) It so happened that a Feff Warlord or the like from nearby attacked one of the participants who then killed the aggressor and globaled high on it. He would’ve won the contest easily, had it not been for a very unprobable 600+ PED Saba HoF that day. I’ve also been to an Exo event where the organizer was forced to run around and beg everyone to plz not kill the Chompers present and remain fair to the other participants. Under the current circumstances there is no way I can prevent someone from accidentally killing a big mob during the event––or even bringing a big mob from nearby over to the event area on purpose. I can only take precautions. One is to chose a Land Area with lots of water around, the other is to try to make sure that getting »too high a loot« will not win you the main prize (a bit like busting out in BlackJack). Actually, the third highest single loot being awarded the main prize adds some nice strategic component to the event. If halfway thru the event, say, you’re holding third place––i.e. the main prize––, do you shoot on because you might be overtaken and still need a higher loot and therefore risk too high a loot, or do you sit still and just hope nobody gets in front of you in the remainder of the time? ![]() We had some fun at Nea’s, when Qetesh gave away I think 500 PED for second place in a one hour Ambu event (while first place was getting 1 PEC). About 20 mins before the end iIrc GeorgeSkywalker gained second place and afterwards did shoot another Ambu. For quite some time he was agonizing loudly whether to loot the beast or not. On the one hand it could just lose him second place and 500 PED, on the other hand it could be his one and only Mega ATH of his lifetime... (Assuming here, that the time of kill counts and not the time of the looting.) In the end George looted, nothing happened, and he upheld the second place for some nice PEDs. ![]() Third, to win the main prize is a lot more easier, especially for beginners. In my experience, in events like this one, one, maybe two globals usually come up. So, for third place it should only take something like a mini––and even a mini mini might suffice to win the main prize of this event. This is certainly within the possibilities of everyone. And a Bery Young is certainly capable of producing such loot. (My first hunting global was 93 PED from a Bery Mature at old Swamp Camp, with a TT longblade...) In all probability you will not have the burden to hit a global, when you want to win the main prize of the contest. Prizes, Prices and the Rest Well, I do like my loot to include items, even if it just be a Minstrel Vase or the like (got a nice collection of those in my Storage ).So, besides the PEDs, I put in some oddities. Or––rather not, for I really like those baby spidey dolls and I think one makes a nice prize, and I will definitely shoot with you to compete for 2nd place, because I urgently need to get my hands on that Wooden Kitchen Table sitting there. ![]() Somehow I think, even a small event should have a prize total of 50 PED or so. I also think that the main prize value should be at least something like factor 10 of the ticket price, otherwise it wouldn’t normally be interesting to put up the PEDs for the ticket anymore. Therefore, your minimum cost to create an in-game event like this is about 125 PED (50 PED set-up, 25 PED area rent per half hour, 50 PED prizes). On the other hand––in my experience––, you can only hope for about 20 paying participants in an event like this. To break even, you’d have to charge them at least 6-7 PED for a ticket, which in turn violates the »factor-10-rule« from above. So a lot less ppl would come than 20, really. In addition, you just cannot charge beginners with a ticket price that high. 3 PED is quite a lot for a beginner, and the ticket price should be below that. So no way, you will make ends meet without sponsoring of some kind, or you end up paying for your event out of your own PED card. When you add it all up, event creating for beginners’ events is all but encouraged by the system. Which is unfortunate, to say the least. P. S.: I hate that one cannot even change and correct the announcement text, when the event has been created. ![]() Last edited by GradenFoss; 02-23-2010 at 10:49.. |

Ah, that will explain everything.
![]() For your next events I would suggest you to write everything down in a word document before creating your EF thread and use "cut and paste" to give all necesary information from the beginning. Anyway, GL with the event. ![]() |
