OK, it's the Run as Admin setting in Vista that was causing a problem, repeated updateds of old stuff.. Ignore me ...

Don't install PE/EU in C:\Program Files folder, instead install it on another partition, i.e. D:\Games\ and there shouldn't be the problems with updating

or, for 95% of the playerbase (estimate ofc) that don't have another partition ... "run as admin" :P
