Ivan Hurricane Katrina (an offensive name)

I don't post much, friends...but....

...and I just noticed the name today when I saw a global.

I can tolerate names being called....F words, etc words and such, but this name is offensive. My family evacuated Katrina. I lived in the New Orleans Suburb of Kenner during the event. We lost everything. I am not asking for sympathy, but.....

Doesn't anyone else find this name offensive, given the suffering of thousands of people at the hands of Katrina? Perhaps I am just too sensitive to it since it hits so close to home. Anyhow....I think it speaks to the character of a person to use such a name.

Honestly, i can't decide if this is over the line or not, in my mind. I do know, though, that everyone is offended by something, and if we were disallowed from mentioning all off those somethings, I'm not sure there would be much to talk about

Hurricane Ivan was also pretty damn bad.... I lived through Ivan (Florida).. I will give him a little doubt and hope that maybe he lived though both hurricanes? Maybe having the names of the hurricane in his EU name, is his way of dealing with the tragedy?

I live in the Caribbean and deal with these every year. I have seen families, economies, and complete countries ruined by them. I don't find it offensive at all. Just like the soccer team named Tornadoes, or the Hurricanes, they dont offend me, nor thunderstrike or lightning bolt (sorry golfers) its mother nature mate. If you can deal with more adult cursing I dont see this as a problem. Im sorry about your losses but this has nothing to do with being offensive, just try and control mother nature, its harder to figure out than where the loots are. Im well aware of the risks I take where i live, and personally choose to remain. BTW this year Marco is will be a named storm in the Atlantic season, that would be ironic if it ate me.

Wow, nice places there! Just got back from there (Cozumel, Cayman Islands, Jamaica) and loved it! Might end up living there after my retirement in a few decades !

About the name, I personally don't find it offensive, however, I didn't live through it so I don't have the same emotional attachment vulnerability to it as OP has. I do understand why it might offend you, but I think that being offended like this will always be part of our lives. People are always trying to get you mad one way or another... we just have to live through it. Sorry for you loss btw.

Sorry for your losses, OP, but I think your response may be a little oversensitive.

My knee-jerk reaction to your post was "..and what was Ivan, chopped liver?", but then I realized that as people it's hard to equate the intangeable to our own personal experiences.

Personally, I choose to recall some of the amazing acts of selflessness and heroism exhibited during and after Katrina as an example of what humanity *can* achieve if we'd just put petty things like greed and war behind us.

...if we eliminated everything in this world that anyone found offensive, we'd live in a very grey, uncreative world. Bad things happen to millions of people everyday. Perhaps my avatar name might offend people who had a loved-one die in a blizzard...dunno.

There are some avatar names that are much worse than this. There are some team names which make any avatar names pale by comparison in their rudeness and insensitivity.

If this *truly* offends you, seriously, I would talk to someone. It seems your experience has left a wound that is long-overdue to heal.

My roof was torn off and my power was out for 3 months. Not exactly losing "everything", but we had to make-do with alot of things.
Still though, I don't exactly find the name offensive.
