to trusting - a sad state of affairs

You gave someone you had only known for 2-3 days $140 and you are surprised you lost it? Would you do that in real life? You either didn't have a mentor or not a good one. There are a small minority of people in Entropia who would sell their own grandmother for 10ped sadly.

There are plenty of good trustworthy people in game, but you dont trust someone you've only known that long.

Yep there's always the occasional ass who comes along to rip you off....I tend to attempt to limit myself to trusting only a limited group of people, but sometimes I get a bit too trusting.....It happens to the best of us - namely me! :P

Too trusting on this occasion maybe yes... its a shame such things happen, but its the way things work when all trades are final.

I personally do very good with the rule I put on meself:
"Do not lend out stuff which a) I can't afford losing and b) the friendship would not be worth to be lost over."

Apparently you could afford to lose it very well and now you know the "value" of that newly building friendship was worth less than 140$.

A small price to pay for knowing for certain?

Yes your mom in the grand scheme of things $100 is a pittance. 3 days can seem like a small amount of time but I am usually a good judge of character on here and in game so considering the amount of time we'd actually spent talking in those 3 days it didn't seem that short. Call it what you will. Call it stupidity. Call it to trusting. Call it whatever.

Yeah i'm disappointed about losing the 1k peds. However, the most disappointing thing for me is finding out that my trust was misplaced. Which was the point of this thread. It's very interesting to see the responses from everyone on here. None of the responses so far have been much of a surprise.

Hopefully i'm being alittle premature and he's had some issues rl that he's had to deal with which is keeping him away from the game. If that is the case I would hope it's nothing to serious.


As far as the hangar is concerned yourmom considering my playing peds are totally seperate to my hangar quest then there is no problem in that respect

I hope your friend does in fact have issues IRL and you're mistaken.
Well - I don't hope he has issues - but you know what I mean.

If not - then lesson learned and you'll hopefully take a little collateral when dealing with people in the future.

Y'kno, my ex has a bf who blamed my son for being robbed. You and he should meet and go find rl victims to beat up.

Threads like this do more than just generate sympathy or cause the community to (very rarely) help towards reimbursing the avatar's loss.

They serve to emphasise the point that the system here reflects real life, with the glaring exception of it having no police service. Every time someone gets scammed, MA is faced with the fact that they provide no real security against this, and some who are liable to make the mistakes leading to personal loss are saved from them.

Just because you think you have the experience or understanding not to get scammed doesn't mean you should judge others by your standards.

Quite a few scammers are well known, and the weight of evidence is against them; yet they are allowed to continue to play.

Sure, if an avatar gets caught in the same scam twice it's a different matter. But once, and it amounts to a hard life lesson; which takes courage to share.

I also know from rl experience of victims that people with your attitude of snide invunrability require a hell of a lot more resources to help if the impossible happens and they become victims themselves.

Should the 12th of never ever happen to arrive in your case, I hope you post it. Not so as you can get the community laughing at you; but so as you can experience the true thing that makes this a community...its compassion.

Sorry you got scammed, hope you reported them even though it'll do no good other than to make MA aware of the avatar in question having a dodgy rep. While they are powerless to help, I tend to console myself with the thought that they might just keep a little list

Very nice post chimp. I'll give it another week or so. If i've still not had any contact i'll maybe message MA about it. Maybe as you say they do keep a little list of some sort.

I also I want to express my comments about $100 being a pittance a little bit better. I don't want to be disrepesctful to people that find this to be a reasonable amount of money. When I was growing up this WOULD have been a reasonable amount of money. I am just lucky enough to be in a situation where to me and my wife $100 really isn't a great deal of money. However, there was a time in the beginning of our relationship when the loss of $100 would have been a bit of a blow. Thankfully now it isn't that much and I can absorb the loss (if indeed I have definitely lost it).

After all the person "may" still turn up. What bothers me more is someone that would gain peoples confidences with the sole purpose to rip them off. I have plenty of people on my fl that I regular lend and also borrow peds/items too. There's one guy, even though i've never met him and only know him through here that I wouldn't have any qualms about lending a reasonable amount of peds too. Although of course if it got to a ridiculous amount then i'd secure callatoral.

It's just a shame that as time goes by it becomes harder to trust people.

Back in the old days you can put a penny on a desk and it would remain there all day. These days, if you set a quarter on your desk, it's gone within minutes. (where did i read that at? Sounded good though, huh?!) Sad world we live in. I hope the dude does show up and explains.
