i guess this the post you refer to? I would love to beleive this, but it's the opposite. These abbreviations have one meaning and one only, and that is the statements to which they imply. To argue otherwise is just nonsensical. Really, give me another definition of lol, other than laugh out loud. While i do agree it has become a word unto itself, it's definition never faltered.

Ever. So no, it's not the opposite. It's the complete opposite of the opposite. If you need to ask the above question, then you haven't been aexposed to the lol culture long enough.

I remember the "z" became popular end of 1980 when the illegal softwaresharing came up.

Examples: Warez, Appz, Gamez, Moviez, Crackz, Serialz

In the beginning hackerz thought they could avoid their websites like that from being found by provider or police because they were not found by automated search systems that searched for words like "hackers" and not "hackerz".
Of course nowadays that sound rediculous but in the beginning of internet it was a technique used often even if not for a long time.

LOL this has long since stopped being an academic debate and has dissolved into nothing more than "this is what i think and it is a fact"

Don't you need some kind of academic context for it to be that?

But lets continue anyhow

lol is about as much an abbreviation these days as is the word "laser"...
once upon a time it was an abbreviation, but only uptight academics types ever think about it as one.

The rest of the world treat it as just another word.

"lol" has a lot of associations into the culture in which it is used, and means a lot more then a mere "laughing out loud"
