But, you can print off the ukash bar codes and just get the shop to scan them. I have to do this a lot

I had same challenge when I opened my VR card account. There is this nice service at a Romanian bank, that for a debt/cc card you might have, you can open a virtual card, usable only on Internet, and you can interact with it only at the ATM, through the debt/cc account.

Oh well. So I entered in the bank store (BCR - World Trade Plaza for Romanians), and asked about the card. Panic! Panic I say. All those nice old (well, 35-40 yo :P) ladies who touch a computer with a sort of fear combined with the deepest respect..

"A card for Internet? What do you mean?" "Well, you see, is on your site, is called Virtuon" "Ah but I don't know about that" (ffs, I've been fired for less).

And on and on, the adventure of getting the code on the bill statement. Oh dear.

Then, someday I enter the store to add again some IRL peds to the card and the fatty at the office comes to me "Ah, nice you came, sir. You see, wanted to ask you about that card, you know, I have again a customer who wants one"

I have trained all staff personally at my local shop, they now all call me MrUkash when i go in, and immediately ask me how much i'm after!

I too get the funny looks, and the 'What's it for?' questions , to which i say ' A way of buying things online without divulging your bank/card details.

I'm sure they think i'm using the ukash to do some online porn thing or something because the ukash machine thingymebobs asks them if the purchaser is over 18 and i'm usually gettin a nice chunk of ukash with a bottle of bacardi under my arm and some tinnies.

P.S. It's not actually the till that does the ukash thing it's like a yellow box next to the till that does it, maybe that was your problem OP?

Ok, I'm Polish too (greetings from Sotn Pinky) and what I can say that I had problems with buying Ukash from shops with either native Brits or another nationalities working there. 1st thing (on topic)is that Ukash is generally unknown and unpopular. They know what is top up voucher, they know how to top up electricity key and such, but Ukash? You do not use it everyday, you can't buy beer for it in he nearest Red Lion, so what's use for it? Last time I found out that in the CoOp very close to the place I live I had no problems with buying Ukash at all. I think shop assistant might be Pakistani or other foreigner. 2nd thing (partially off topic) Pinky, is that many Brits have serious problems with understanding ppl with different accents. I suppose that it's caused by the fact that Brits usually do not learn languages other than their own. So when they hear some sounds slightly different from what they are used to, they start panicking. For some reason I've never had problems with buying things from ppl with foreign background, while I love torturing one girl (she's British) with my accent when I buy tobacco. At first she freezes, thinks veeeery long, than hands out wrong bag. Resembles me buying Ukash story tbh. Funny thing is that I had no problems with buying anything around the Europe, hell even commiting a customer's suicide by using english in some fast food in France (I was thinking for a while before I ordered some pizza if I should use English at all, maybe German would be more neutral?). So yeah, Brits have problems with understanding ppl for whom English is not their native language.
Don't understand that Ain's note about Euro 2008 actually. Like Polish team has left the group even... Sheesh, Ain, every nation divides ppl into cathegories: "ours" (the best) and "strangers" (ofc not the best). We do the same thing in Poland, the same they do in Germany, Russia... and every country or even tribe around the globe. The problems come when someone is not able to forget about that first cathegory and doesn't even bother about trying to learn what that person really is like. I don't bother if some Brit out there in the shop or pub cathegorises me as Polish. I'm not going to befriend with that person anyway, I'm just there to buy something and leave (or stay if it's pint of beer in case of pub).
