The idea has sprung when I read about a thread of designed avatars. The threadstarter wrote that because some avatars have much more luck in one profession then another, MindArk might assign what you will become when you create your avatar. I got the feeling myself that I have much more luck mining then I do hunting. Even though I am much better in hunting.
Here are my profession levels in mining and hunting: The idea of this Hunting vs. Mining is to see if I really get better results mining. Both my skills and my gear are much better for hunting. Each will begin with 500 PEDs. To ensure that I calculate the profit/loss in the same way, I’ve made some rules for myself. 1. Spend about the same each run on hunting as on mining. 2. All items that I have can be used. All I have to pay for is decay. For limited items the same applies. 3. The use of a Teleport Chip is free of charge, including MindEssence. 4. Everything that I get and don’t sell to the TradeTerminal will be stored for free. 5. Space Ships that I find will be split 40/10 mining/hunting. 6. Auction fees have to be paid by the profession that is selling. 7. Refining is optional. 8. Improvement on gear will be paid by the professions that will use it. 9. It is over when one profession has less then 18 PEDs. This is approximately one Castorian Combat Enblade A or 12 bombs and probes. 10. Skills will not be counted. I may of course list new skill ranks or profession levels. 11. Fruit etc. will be split as good as it gets. 12. If the amount spend for one is lower then 90% of that for the other, then this will be corrected. 13. If what I calculate to have spend is not the same as the difference on the PEDcard, the PEDcard will be considered to have the "true" amount. I have decided where my first five runs will be. I may not hunt here very much, but I got some idea what to encounter there and what armour to wear, thanks to Entropedia. I haven’t mined here before, with the exception of nr. 2 (ores) and nr. 4 (enmatter), but not much there either. 1. Southwest of Hadesheim: Maffoid and Drone. 2. Southwestside of Treasure Island: Cornundacauda. 3. South of Shinook Jungle: Argonaut and Hiryuu. 4. Shinook River: Tripudion. 5. West of Tethys Creek: Snarg and Feffoid. I will (most likely) stay on Calypso. I don’t like camping at all and will face both easy as difficult mobs. Hunting Conditions I will use the following for hunting: Weapons Katsuichi Valor, Korss H380 (L) + A103 and Marber Bravo-Type + A104. When I can’t repair the Katsuichi Valor anymore, I will use a Castorian A and/or Opalo + A101. Armour Pixie, Gremlin, 4C, 6A and a mix of 2A/5B (4/3). Fap EK-2600, Hedoc SK-20 (L) and Vivo T1. Sochunts Will not be counted here. I will only post the hunting related part here. Here is a link to Mining vs. Hunting ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Ardorj; 04-02-2008 at 16:39. |

Run #1
Location: Southwest of Hadesheim Ammo: 55 PEDs Total loot: 89.88 PEDs Decay: 87.04 PEDs Ammo back: 41.12 PEDs Leftover: 408.57 PEDs Return: 89.1% Comments: This is one location I haven't visited before. According to Entropedia I should find Maffoids and Drones. I searched all around, but haven't seen one drone. I was however greeted time after time by the annoying Merp. Cornundoses can be found there as well and oh yes Maffoids too. I got a near global on a Cornundos that's all. Nothing intresting to say here. I think the return is rather good for me. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Run #2
Location: Southwestside of Treasure Island Ammo: 55 PEDs Total loot: 29.27 PEDs Decay: 89.57 PEDs Ammo back: 46.32 PEDs Leftover: 308.36 PEDs Return: 29.2% Comments: I've made two new rules for myself: 12. If the amount spend for one is lower then 90% of that for the other, then this will be corrected. 13. If what I calculate to have spend is not the same as the difference on the PEDcard, the PEDcard will be considered to have the "true" amount. My Hunting PEDcard has more PEDs then it should be (if I wrote everything down right). I got a lucky Hunting PEDcard. Skillwise: I got this little suprise. It's one of my lowest profstandings. Lootwise: move along please, nothing to see here. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Run #3
Comments: This was a mining only run. I saw three RiverSnappers, an Exarosaur and a Bristlehog. I let them all live. Run #4 Location: South/soutwest of Shinook Jungle Ammo: 55 PEDs Total loot: 62.50 PEDs Decay: 77.35 PEDs Ammo back: 49.49 PEDs Leftover: 228.52 PEDs Return: 74.7% Comments: Almost all Argonauts and Hiryuu's where looting bad. Few oils here, few wool there. One of the last had something like 30 PEDs. Normally I hunt untill I get the Your Katsuichi Valor is close to breaking ... blablabla ... repair it ..., but I stopped a little bit earlier now. Run #5 Location: Shinook River Ammo: 55 PEDs Total loot: 38.33 PEDs Decay: 90.78 PEDs Ammo back: 50.60 PEDs Leftover: 137.07 PEDs Return: 39.9% Comments: First I thought that I would only see Tripudion Young to Old. Seeing Stalkers roaming the countryside was a bit of a shock. I went back to New Oxford to correct my armourchoose. Going back in, it was a lot better. But not lootwise. Talking about loot: I looted a lot of Tripudion Skins, a total of eleven. I only have two skins in storage from previous hunts, and I don't think I sold any Tripskin. I make a comparrison of my hunting vs. mining soon. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

First a little comment:
The graph I've made is most likely not good to compare my hunting and mining results. A better may be total spend (PED) against total return (tt PED) or the difference in total return (tt PED) between mining and hunting from each run. I'll think about a better way to compare hunting and mining. Run #6 Location: West of Tethys Creek Ammo: 45 PEDs Total loot: 59.90 PEDs Decay: 88.62 PEDs Ammo back: 39.91 PEDs Leftover: 46.42 PEDs Return: 63.0% Comments: In my opinion Snarg is one of the most beautiful mobs. I once spend reviving ten times before one was death and it gave me a HoF! If only they would repeat the payout today. But I got this sweatthing (oke a Feffoid did the trick): I made a screenshot of my loot (including mining finds). At that time I hadn't dropped all bombs and probes, so this isn't good as a comparision. I still think the Snarg is a formidable creature. Run #7 Location: Around Atlas Haven Ammo: 45 PEDs Total loot: 0.31 PEDs Decay: 0.54 PEDs Ammo back: 43.32 PEDs Leftover: 44.20 PEDs Return: 14.0% Comments: This was from shooting a few mobs that bothered me while I dropped the remaining bombs and probes from Run #6. I killed two Kerberos with no loot, which is the result of the extremly poor return. Nothing is expected much anyway with spending 2.22 PEDs ... Better to just forget this ... Now that I've gone trough the initial 500 PEDs I may have to sell some loot. Although I have my Katsuichi fully repaired now and some PEDs left from the ammo I loot. I use ~10 PED in ammo at max, so I can do another hunting Run withing selling. This is not the same for mining. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
