Using real life models and maquettes are quite common in game development. If you are interested in the biz keep an eye on Game Developer Magazine I think it was a couple issues ago they had a whole article on using real life models to help you bring detail to your virtual ones.

I have worked on a number of projects that went from 2D sketch to 3D real life model to a virtual 3D one. Designers actually reference the 3D real life model quite frequently and base many changes off it. I guess it all depends on the firm you are working for and the resources that are available.

I would love to show you the process involved but I can't due to non-disclosure agreements. The information is out there though GL on your quest.
