I agree that a GC should be bought, and that it increases your saftey, but it's not the be all and end all of saftey.

The GC produces a code through some algorithm. That means someone could find that algorithm. Then use that to find out what the next GC code will be. Then they can still log into your account. So it's not 100% fool proof.

Make your password long. Make it completely random. Change it fairly often. Get good anti-virus(avast, free and it rocks). Do virus scans. That will make you a bit more safe than just buying a GC.

More Info:

-When I bought my goldcare in 2004 or 2005, a person from MA with a cute swedish accent called me to confirm my adress. Not sure they do that anymore

-My goldcard is one of the first ones shipped cause it has a low number on it

-I understand why they want them shipped back before they replace it for free (so they don't have to do it too much). Going to the post office, shipping stuff to sweden, asking for reimbursment, etc is abit of a hassle. Since I don't even live on the same continent, all those fees might just end up being less than buying a new reader.

-I definatley recommend having a gold card. I can click on random entropia sites, download programs and not care about my password.

-So clearly waiting a week + paying for a goldcard might end up being more expensive and time consuming than: using a 1/32" or 1mm screwdriver. I cleaned my connectors (no water, just abit of cloth+rubbing alcohol that tends to evaporate easily). My battery still works after all that time, but It'd cost me like 3$ to buy new ones. I also haven't done anything more than that, because I know from personal experience, tinkering with things usually causes me to break them and no one else to blame when that happens.

But I got one anyways - better to protect my ingame earnings than to lose it, even if I didn't deposit anything to get it

They did not call me when I ordered the free gold card, so that might have been a thing of the past.

make this thread a sticky or something, this is realy important to all new players (and to existing players that still dont have a goldcard)
