I have an update

Its a happy update!

Received two emails today from PayPal, 2 cases/2 sets of money.

They accept the transactions were fraudulent, and have returned the money.

Not only that! The money has been transferred back to my bank account! Already!!

(this is without having to register a new card, or even unlocking that account)

pop3 eMails are transmitted in plain text. You can read the data literally online.

There are some pop3 email providers which allow encryption (gmail pop3 uses SSL if I recall correctly).

Most of the free email providers like hotmail don't even provide encryption even if you use the web based email access.

Very few provide SSL access to web based email (again Gmail has SSL access).

But of course this only provides security for the email data being transferred from the server to the PC.

You can never say for sure how a PC could be infected unless you do deep forensics on the PC. Furthermore anti virus software will not always protect against some classes of malware (root kits amongst others come to mind ).

If you are not sure of how someone got access to your details but suspect that it is from your PC, best is to reformat the PC, update it with all patches, get some anti malware software (anti virus / anti spyware / firewall / etc), and hope for the best.

Of course you can always switch to a more secure OS like OSX or Linux for your primary usage and dual boot to windows for just gaming.

This assumes that the servers used for your various transactions are not hacked themselves - in that case, all bets are off

Anyway, good to know that you are on the way to getting it all settled.

I highly recommend e-card which is a service that atleast MasterCard have (I don't know about VISA). The e-card is an application that MasterCard provide and it generates you one-time use only restricted mastercard card numbers, cvv2 and expiry date. When you generate the card you also choose how much cash that card should be valid for and also for how long. When I use my mastercard online, such as paypal, I just generate a card and choose how much I want to spend with that card (I.e. $20) and I set the expiry date to one month most of the times, and valid for one transaction. When payment is done within the criterias, the card is expired automaticly. Very nice and secure service.
