I was watching the news, and saw this article about the double leg amputee that wasn't allowed to participate on official competitions, due to his "mechanical advantanged legs".
*edit* it seems he is allowed to participate now. full article here. He uses 2 curved blades below his knees, and he can run like hell! The question is... If advanced body implants that would replace any bodypart and out do its performance by 10x, would you have it installed? Imagine having a pair of bionic eyes that would zoom in 10x on something, as accurate as your real eyes do now... Or even a pair of legs that would allow you to run at 80km/h... The downside would be having to remove your own biological parts. Would you do it? Replace fine, functional bio parts for advanced / enhanced implants, even if there was nothing wrong with the organic ones in the first place? Some examples: -Eyes that would see in the dark, heat vision, zoom, predator like. -Legs that would never get tired, that would make u run as fast as a speeding car. -Arms that would lift weight up to 10X your own, without problems. - Upgrade your brain with modules for memory, computer connections, etc. -Even your bones, for maximum resiliance, wolverine style. I saw that article.
I guess its one of those questions that your answer is never really going to matter until the point in time that it actually matters - if you get what I mean. I could easily say no today - then tomorrow lose my legs and then start begging for bionics. |

if i was "forced" to have a bionic part, then yes, but i wouldn't just chop one leg out to have a bionic one..
Its an awsome thing to ppl that suffers accidents and loses a important part of the body, or due to a natural disease or other cause, has to lose any part, but i would only do it in that case. |

If I had the ability to improve my body by biomechanical means it wouldn't take long before it became questionable if I really was human anymore...
But I would be very careful when upgrading my brain, probably keeping the original one and only adding additional memory and computing nodes but perhaps infuse my original one with some kind of neural nanoweb that would gradually take over the biological parts I had left to prevent neural decline and dementia, thus successfully grant me practical immortality and should, by time replace my whole self with some kind of neohumanic entity... |

I don't think I would willingly cut off my leg or take out an eye for replacement - maybe if I had an accident and it had to go anyway. But if you could replace something more subtle, such as just the muscle in your leg and maybe enhance the skeleton to cope with the added power, the sure I'll consider that. I still want to look human (but looking at new robots today, there might not be a problem cutting off your entire leg and replacing it with a life-like fake - in the future).
