A couple of years ago, I did a thread updating the Hurricane season. As the last couple of years have been rather slow, I have a feeling that this season will be more active. Therefore, I'm gonna do the thread again.
Hurricane Season 2008 officially starts June 1st, but already we have our first Tropical Storm. Tropical Storm Arthur formed near the Yucatan Pennisula, over Belize. While it is not expected to affect the US at all, it will affect parts of NE S. America and probably Mexico in the days to come. It is not a very strong or organized storm, but flooding is expected over the next few hours. It will leave the Pennisula and then rebuild a bit before heading westward into S. Mexico. You can read the Weather Channel report here: http://www.weather.com/newscenter/hu...l?from=hp_news I will update this thread as needed, throughout the season. I don't see much need to update daily at this point, but anytime new information is released, I will update ASAP. To everyone affected by both the Pacific and Atlantic Hurricane season, please stay safe and think smart. Be sure to let us all know if you are in an affected area so we can keep you and your families in our houghts. HUGZ all & 'Til next time, Runt |

I once lived in Houston, Texas, and as a result was very keen about hurricanes. They certainly can break up the monotony of a lazy summer. In 1983, Hurricane Alicia passed directly over my house (the eye). It was very weird having 100 mph winds and torrential rains for several hours, then blue sky for about 20 minutes, then the wind changed direction and it all started again. I live in Maine now... and I do not miss hurricanes. I still keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center website...

After the 2004 and 2005 seasons, I left Florida, and moved to the relatively high ground of the Ozarks.
Here we only have to worry about Tornadoes. Though, they don't give as much warning as hurricanes. I think we may soon move to even higher ground, like the Teton or Wind River ranges in Wyoming. |

So, Arthur is no more and we are clear of storms for now. I will update again when the next one starts.

Hello My Dear ... each year that you post this, I'm here with ya, because as a resident of Florida, I am very much affected by the hurricane season that spans from June 1st thru November 30th. It has been rather quiet the past couple of years or so, and while I can hope that this trend continues, I'm not holding my breath. Given the recent tornado traffic that has left some devastation in parts of our country, I don't think I would be too excited about living in tornado alley either. I guess I just take my chances and hope for the best, but even when we had those awful couple of years, the West Central Coast on the Bay faired pretty well considering.
I'll stay tuned in ... and will be back to do any of my own reporting along with you. Always nice to run into my Mentor and ex-Soc Leader! I wish you well during this hurricane season as well. ![]() Hugs to you! ![]() |

Good Morning everyone. We now have storm number 2 for the season.
http://www.weather.com/newscenter/hu...ricane_welcome Tropical Storm Bertha is way out in the Atlantic, but she's on her way west. The track is expected to be WNW for now. It's too early to tell where, if at all, it will make landfall next week. FYI, they also keep mentioning a storm growth in the Carribean, so if anything pops up there, it could be quick, but this early in the season, it's unlikely something this close will affect the US. But, you never know. A VERY interesting note..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Bertha In 1996, Hurricane Bertha formed the first week of July, and greatly affected the US East Coast. Is history repeating itself?? Will update daily, until it gets closer in. Be Safe and Happy Hunting! |
