Luckily not everything is black and white, so there is a certain flexibility to the that rule. That is why some discussion was allowed, not discussion about another game, but about how it relates directly to EU. There was never any discussion allowed about SL in itself, only about the bank that was directly related to EU. The same goes for Crysis, which was Crytec's showcase game to introduce the new game engine, which is directly related to EU. In this particular case there is no grey area and no relation to EU at all. And no, the fact that they might be using the same engine in the fututre if it ever launches is not the same thing.

The 'strictly prohibited' is a wording that originates before the CryEngine business and before the events that lead to a more conspicuous link between EU and SL.

My own personal take on the matter is to let slide threads that are discussing EU but validly reference another game as part of that discussion. Crysis being the flagship CryEngine product, it was inevitable that people would quote it and wonder how the EU implementation will compare graphically. So we've been fairly lenient on the rule that's all. I'm sure we can go back to deleting every reference of every game ever mentioned if you'd really prefer that.

Otherwise, its always going to be down to the mod or admin's judgement call. And on this one sorry, I tend to agree with those who have already brought it up, the thread is predominantly discussing another game rather than discussing EU.
