I am looking into Web Design as a career and wanted to get some input.

Which fields are the easiest to learn, and which pay better.

I can obtain certification in the fields of:

Java/JavaScript Programming Web Development
Dreamweaver Web Content Developer
XML Website Development
PHP Website Development
Perl Website Development (never heard of Perl...)
ASP Website Development

I can also take some classes in HTTP, C++, and Visual Basic.

Which languages are used the most commonly?

Here is some data that I found.

Looks like C, Java,PHP, and C++ for the win.


Looks like I will try to specialize in one of them.

But I would still like to hear more about languages, I want to hear some use feedback, from people who use more than one, that can compare, or just someone who uses one language.

What you are describing is more "Web Development" than "Web Design"

More the back end programming than the pretty graphics on the front end.

Of those languages you mention I would say that PHP and Java or JavaScript, would be the most useful.

The others are great as well, but as PHP is opensource, many many many applications use it now.

I would say the main things to pick up on are the following,

HTML
JavaScript
CSS

nearly everything else you mentioned will use the above and without a good knowledge in the above it can make life very difficult.

I would also agree this is more web development rather than web design

HTML, CSS and JavaScript are a must for the front-end.
for the back-end you have many options, but i'd recommend to become proficient in PHP, Java, XML and mySQL.

with those, you can develop pretty complex web sites.

now, if you really want to have a cutting edge with new Web2.0-style GUIs, i'd recommend to learn AJAX basics, as a foundation, and any of the current frameworks out there (GWT, Ext-GWT, ...)
