American Tragedy

September 11’th has become a time of reflection and commemoration in our country, although this consideration lives only in our hearts. Every American citizen can remember where they were that day; the day our nation was stricken by terrorism, our counties intelligence headquarters, The Pentagon, was ripped in half and the World Trade Center’s, our icons of capatolism and free trade, fell to the ground.

Let's also have a moments silence for the tens of thousands of Iraqis that have died, in the so called war on terror. May their families find peace and consolation, that the cycle of death and violence somehow be brought to a close

Let us also spend a moment in silence to for the thousands of US and British Military casualties in the gulf war, all in the name of avenging the September 11 attacks.

Too bad, none of the people behind September 11 were from Iraq.

Let us spare a moment to reflect on all the horrors that have been brought on the world in the name of "protecting our freedom".

And let us pause to think of the democracy we cherish so much, that can send troops at a moment's notice to all four corners of the world, but is somehow unable to send help and aid where it is needed the most.

Indeed, let us hope that the world becomes a better place, in spite of the actions of our leaders.

I may be a cynic or a bastard or whatnot, but i think the fuzz made about september 11th is overrated. I'll second the text i quoted here, however, and add that if america would only use half their military budget to fight poverty, hunger and disease, maybe millions of people (with a large number of children amongst them) wouldn't have to die each year...
We seem to forget that, and instead focus on whatever the media throws at us, whether that is wars, tsunamis or terror attacks. Don't get me wrong, all of these things are terrible, but a greater disaster that can actually be helped is going on, and have been for a long time.
The US isn't the only badguys, so sorry if i made it out to be.

I'll start by saying I am 100% against the "war on terrorism". BUT...

This thread was started to remember the victims of 9/11. Nothing more. 2000+ innocent people died. The only reason why they died was being in the WTC or Pentagon or one of the planes at that exact moment.

Respect their deaths by not politicising that. They were innocent, just like you and me.

The anti-war crowd (me included) blames Bush for even today linking 9/11 to Iraq. Don't do the same thing. If the two are unconnected, don't drag Iraq into a thread that was started to honour the dead.

I am 6 or 7 hours of flying away from NYC, and I know exactly where I was when everything went down. I finsihed the rest of the day of work in a daze. I drove home, tuning into the boring news stations just to hear what happened. As soon as I got home, I turned on the news, and didn't turn it off until 2 AM, despite having a job interview the day after. Most of that night was spent crying. There was anger, too, but I refuse to stoop as low as the bad people.

Of course, we should reflect on the loss of innocent lives on that day.

I am always amoungst the first to pay respects to fallen soldiers in conflicts past in respect of lost family members.

It is politicians that gain political capital from these events, not people like you and I.

We do a great disservice to humanity however, if we elect to officially remember only a small proportion of innocent lives lost in conflict.

ALL innocent victims of war and terrorism deserve a memorial and remembrance. In the absence of a memorial to the MILLIONS of lost innocent lives in the last ten years alone September 11th is a good a day as any to remember them.

I apologise if my last post seemed inflammatory, that is not my intention.

Thanks Toolman for reminding all of us.

Kool-aid drinkers will always be amongst us despite all the education that is thrown at them.

Forgiveness.

It was most assuredly not my intention to start a political debate here in our beloved EF, and for being apart of such a troublesome thread, I am truly sorry.

I have seen threads started with respect to the tsunami victims, the unfortunate victims of the bombings in London, and other such inhuman atrocities, and when the day that sticks in my mind above most others came around, I thought it a good place to share my thoughts and feelings.

My mistake.
