1. German - Born and living there
2. Dutch - mother tongue but not sure if it can be called so: I am dutch but never have lived there, so I speak with german accent and often get to hear 'you speak very well dutch' when beeing in Holland. 'Thanks, I AM dutch!' 3. English - thanks to school and PE |

Hi,
only spoken languages should be valid that are spoken by more than 10.000 people on the earth. Try to say: "I need to pee" in an computer language without using "normal" languages. If you can do that and other people understand that: That will count as language... However, printf("I need to pee") would be an example that won't count...because there is english in... I'am looking forward to the first tries. ![]() Tanor |

Only 2.. Born "english" speaking, spoke dutch most of my life though... Neva got the hang of german, and I droped french as soon as I could ... But even my bad english and dutch caused me to flunk my education..
I must add that communicating using programming languages always gives me less communication problems.. |

I voted one.
English. I know some Spanish (enough to make simple sentences) and a teeny bit of sign language (as i was teaching my baby to sign so i would know exactly what she wants instead of her crying and not being able to verbally tell me). We went a bit further with it than just the basics though. |

I would be interesting if people added where they lived to their posts (those who don't have it already listed). My experience has always been that the majority of people who grew up or live in a country that speaks english as their primary language never really learn any other languages, at least not enough to be considered fluent. Where as people living in other countries tend to be fluent in several languages. Is this true, or just my perception? Perhaps it just seems this way because people who I meet who are from other countries either IRL or in-game tend to be able to speak at least some english and often 2 or 3 additional languages, but the only way I am able to meet these people is because they do speak English. Whereas most people I know who were born in the US don't speak any other languages. Maybe this is a result of the school system here.
Personally, I voted 1, English, I also speak some spanish, but not enough to consider myself fluent. I also live in the US. |

That is definitely my perception as well. I am also from the US. In school we didn't have to take another language. Many hispanics know spanish (as their first language) and then send their 5 year old kids to school and they "pick up" English as the school year goes on. I am amazed with those kids being able to get along all year not knowing a lick of English and come out fluent at the end of the year! They are slowly starting to incorporate Spanish in the classrooms. I wish they would! I think it is great to know another language, especially when there are so many here that speak Spanish. One school around here has a signing club, but not ours. I would put my son in it (if he wanted) had it been available at his school. |
