I respect and understand a lot of what others have written here but I think there is one big misunderstanding here that is making it seem a lot worse then it really is.


The Boy shot the animal 8 times with a .50 cal hand gun all at once, instead of saying chased.. I think they should have said Tracked for 3 hours… News papers might have changed this word to make the article more exciting.. They do that!

It’s a perfectly acceptable way for hunting big game here in the states to wait for the animal a few hours before you start to track it, at least that is what I was taught in my NYS hunting course. They prefer you wait a few hours before you track down your kill over here ( I guess less hurt hunters this way , from a dying animals last chance to strike back?)

Also unless you use a shot gun to kill game, your not really going to see the animal die in one shot, not from the average hunter. So for most kills you can expect the game to run servile miles away .

At first was really angry to see this. But after reading a little more about it then I changed my mind.

There is a lot of these hogs. But not many people hunting them because these babies are dangerous.

Hmmm... perfectly acceptable is a strange thing to describe what happened here... and if a shotgun kills in one shot, then use one... surely... although the average 12-bore would only part this thing's hair

I hunted since I was old enough to hold a gun, and there's nothing acceptable to me about taking a shot you know won't have a chance of killing the animal. You might as well tie it to a short rope and shoot it blindfolded.

A story: My dad worked on a multi-National forces base in Sinai, Egypt. A stray dog at an O/P was thought to be a nuisance, so the US soldiers there were told to shoot it. Instead of calmly dispatching it with a a shot to the head, they chose to let it run and went after it with machine guns. It made it to the next O/P, several miles away, with nine bullets in various parts of it. It was then killed by several soldiers all firing at it as it ran round trying to find somewhere to hide. Perfectly acceptable LOL... kids with toys.

The right to bear arms isn't the right to use them thoughtlessly. What's next? Elephant hunting with nailbats?

Oh, and if it was shot all at once like Nicole said... 9 shots from a 5-shot revolver?

I have been reading this thread over my husbands sholder for a few days, and wanted to see where it headed before I made my post.

When I first read the article, my first reaction too, (other than the thought of "could this be real?"), was that of disgust. I thought it was perhaps because in my mind, I could not fathom why anyone would want to harm such a magnificent creature, or the fact that the "killer" was an 11 year old boy. But the more I think on it, the more I realised that I just have a dislike for trophy hunting in general, so I think that is where it does not sit well with me.

I have no problem with hunting. We as humans have been doing it for as long as we've been on Earth, and it is a great way of obtaining food. I like my meat. But I also have the presence of mind to know that I don't think I would ever be able to hunt myself. Perhaps I am too "senstive", or too much the "wuss", whatever the reason, I dont think I could do it myself (though I can hear you saying... "what if it was a life-or-death sitution"... which is a whole other topic!)

Nor do I have a problem with the idea that this boy was taught to hunt by his father. Again, we have been hunting for food for ages, and even now there are still places in the world were hunting is one of the only ways to obtain food. I think it was the way in which he was taught that is the problem. He was not taught to hunt for only what was needed-indeed the fact that sausage will be made seemed like an afterthought. Nor did it seem that the child was taught respect for the creature, and responsibility for the life he had taken. It is my opinion that if you are to teach your child to hunt, you give him/her a better reason than "it'll look good on the wall", and then you have the child clean the carcass him/herself. If that is too much for them to deal with, then they aren't ready to hunt!

When I used to shoot olymp. Disc. 5 and 9, I had as one of my tasks to select talented new youngsters for further passing to elite-training (one day, if they were lucky).

ONE time, just one time, someone turned around with an airgun, loaded.

I did not just throw him out. I did it with my feet and kicks. He was then not accepted anymore in any shooting club we had relations with and his parents had to show up on me.

THAT is how I deal/dealt with unresponsible people and guns.

Too bad I cannot apply that to everyone and that my "time" has passed

I grew in countryside and during the whole year cooking some domestic animal wasn't something extraordinary. That's a reason why I hate hunting. Mindless slaughter of more food than is needed. And 11 yrs with gun is just wrong.
