I think all the complaining is a bit overblown.

1.) It's male, not female (an important consideration in hunting).

2.) Given it's size (both absolute, and relative for a hog), 9 shots to take it down is not unreasonable, even for a .50 cal pistol. Hogs generally don't stand there, especially after the first shot, and unless you hit brains or internal organs, it's not going to die quickly. Also, while a rifle may have more power (and at range, more accuracy), a 11 year old may have more problems trying to lug around a large caliber rifle all day. The pistol was probably chosen as a tradeoff between power, weight, and recoil. Had he been carrying a .22 rifle, he'd just have annoyed the hog.

3.) Having the adults watching with rifles to prevent the hog from charging is not inhumane, it's smart. Part of hunting is trying not to get killed yourself (remember, that kid doesn't respawn at a revival terminal if he gets trampled). If the entire hunting party is worried about the kill, then you actually stand a greater chance of incurring injury.

4.) A hog that size is probably a better choice for hunting than a smaller hog - it lets the other hogs have a shot at mating.

In my opinion the child is learning valuable skills and lessons, and they are getting a lot of food out of it (mmm, sausage...). The thing could also be a danger out there in the wild, so it's good that someone got it before it got them. It's the circle of life, and it moves us all.
