www.trendmicro.com Free Housecall is pretty effective as far as a free service goes.
It's an online service which isn't everyone's cup of tea but I've found viruses and spy/greyware with it that other apps have missed. |

Just open the hosts file with any texteditor and manually edit away the bad parts of it. It should be pretty obvious what parts in the file that is bad. It should be more or less empty as per default.
the file should look something like this: Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts |

host file can be deletted , and you create a TXT file that you call host.
You really dont need it.its list of ip , that windows read , but never update or use... Here what that file should contain : # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost |
