Companies pulling out of Second Life

I read an article the other day that said that companies were pulling their store fronts out of SecondLife due to the fact that the number one selling product in game are sexual toys for avatars.

I also read yesterday that all Gambling in SL has stopped.

What do you think this will do to SL's economy?

I thought mentioning other games was against the forum rules, and a thread about another game......??? Oh well!

To be honest I've never played and probably never will.....so I really don't care!! lol

I read a wired article about the SL thing and I think the major problem was lack of things to do and reasons for avatars to visit these sites within SL. EU could and hopefully will learn from this and not rely on the current activities in EU to give people reasons to visit a corporate planet. Somehow integrating the corporations within EU maybe allowing it to enhance the virtual experience might make people more apt to purchase their real life products.

I think setting up a shop and saying look at all my virtual representations of real life items is not a crowd draw well at least a sustainable long time crowd draw. But lets say Toyota sets up a planet where they create a few models of space faring vehicles for example a Maramaru Toyota X23 Planet Skipper which enhances my experience in EU it might make me want to buy a Toyota outside of EU, especially if they offer a EU Edition of the real life car(other car companies have Eddie Bauer edition vehicles so its not to far fetched of an idea) The Gran Turismo series of games was a huge success in branding and getting people to buy real versions of virtual designs. Take that and work it into EU in some way with a twist and I think it will be successful.

Its a learning curve and what advertisers and developers need to learn is that they need to engage the participants in some way. If that is not happening well people will loose interest since their attention is focused on what they are currently engaged in.

I would love to send MA a copy of the current Wired magazine it has two very interesting articles the one about SL and the other about ingame advertising.

Im happy to hear companies are pulling out of SL, as it sucks.
I think the fact that the number 1 selling item in SL is a sex toy is extremely sad. And the thought that players probably sit there watching there avatars using the sex toys, maby even jacking off over it is sadder still.

Btw this may be the off-topic area, but discussion of other Games Besides EU is still not allowed under section #15 of the rules.

Expect a methinks
