I used to solve these types of riddles in middle school. I say it was Mr. Plum with the candlestick in the Library.

Done in ~15 minutes.

I used to be in the "gifted class". The one year our teacher had a break-down or something, so for the entire year we solved things similar to this.

It's pretty clear from the rapid solutions that Einstein did not write this riddle as he would not have been stupid enough to claim that only 2% of the world's population could solve it!

Either that or he was having a very bad day!

Wrong! The problem - he DID write.
And I bet, being a very friendly, and sly guy, he said those words on purpose, to encourage people to think and solve it, and to give motivation.
There is a photograph of Einstein explaining that problem on the blackboard.
