Yes, I think you got it.

Lu/ka. Works for an English Speaker to get as close as i can to how it sounded to me.
Only problem remaining is the possibility of (i dont know the proper word) "sound blindness", The inability to hear the difference between spoken sounds.

Classic "stereotypical" example is the Japanese with "sank you" instead of "thank you" as they don't have a "TH" sound, but do have an "S", so hear the "th" in Thank as an "s".

Old joke:

Mitsubishi designed a new car, and when the phone call was made to USA so the name badges could be made, the maker was told to make badges "Mitsubishi Starion" by the person in Japan.

The intended name was "Mitsubishi Stallion" but the Japanese language lacks the "L" sound, and so speaker substituted "R" as that's as close as he/she could get/hear.

Of course, my Japanese language skills are non-existent, so those who make the above errors when speaking English have a far better command of my language than I do of Japanese.
