The term gank has several meanings:

- When an overwhelmingly large or more powerful group or party kills you and/or your group. Commonly used as a verb. "A 60 Hordie ganked me." or "Alliance players are ganking newbies."

- Where a single player purposely attacks a player of the opposing faction who is of substantially lower level

Looks like it comes from 'the other game' (the one we would never play with many Ws in it ). Stole it from their WiKi and think it's used the same way in our beloved Universe.

It does depend what game you play as to what the meaning of "Ganking" is. Ganking is some games (cant mention them here) is where someone is attacked imediately as they come through a gate to that system (you should be able to guess im talking about a space ship game now). However its also become a more general term for being attacked without a chance to defend (over whelming odds).

I think it's original is early that (Waste Of Wage), it was in common when I played a certain korean based fantasy MMORPG ( starts with L & ends in 2)

In RL my circle of friends refers to ganking as in stealing

example :
Danielle ganked the lighter.
Goni ganked my Mob and hof'd on it.
MA ganked all my pedzors.

... but we're not very smart so we could be totally wrong.

Not knowing the context of the usage because I have not seen the particular threads to which you are referring, I don't know which usage is correct. However, outside the gaming community the word "to gank" can also refer to scamming or theft. This is how I hear it used most commonly. For example, "That ______ ganked my armor. He's such a ____ thief" or "You gank ______, I can't believe that sucker bought your line!"
