This happens with at least one of my soc members a week, I'd say.

I first noticed it in April 2007, when a soc mate returned briefly after a long absence, and later everyone thought he was just rudely ignoring the soc chat and pm's.

Then I found that he seemed to eeriely aware of when I tp'd from one location to another, cos whenever I went to Minopolis he came online, but logged as soon as I went back to Genesis.

Bouncing around from tp to tp confirmed it - it was just a 'ghost' on the server.

The inverse of this is that sometimes you KNOW people are online, but can't pm them - tho they can pm you.
At times I've had to go down to Level 1 on CND to reply to a request for a VIP, cos it just wasnt working from the Control Room.

While I am sure this is a bug, there is another option.

If a hacker was to get hold of a number of User-ID's and Password's, they would try and use them.
So they log-in (using stolen info), only to be asked for a GC number. As the hackler does not have the right GC they "cancel" out, and try again, just to make sure.......
Avatar logs-in, logs out, logs in, logs out....

Hacker gives up on that stolen identity, and tries next one on list.

I guess it's a bit like the auction bug, the one where you get an "item sold" message when you win an auction.

Experienced this bug in the past, and my disciple is still showing online on my friend list 4 hours after he logged off, so I think youre safe - it's a bug.

This is a bug caused by a bad disconnect. There is a thread on EF somewhere where the precise same thing happened not a month ago. Also have had it happen with socmates.

I have the same problem with one person in my soc. They appear to be logged in, but they aren't. Some others in my soc don't see him as online though. Weird...

I had this happen with sorg. he was standing in his apartment i could trade and even add him as a friend. turns out he was in the auction in twins

Yeah that seems plausible too Dorsai. Do you definitely appear logged on once you reach the GC point?

I think this rumour about being logged in before you put your Gold Card code in is rubbish. Someone discovered during Merry Mayhem that your Session Time starts when you reach the GC screen, but I don't think you show as logged in until after you've entered a correct code. I think someone's getting mixed up between the two different things.

Hope everything's OK, Pinky - sounds like it's just a bug (similar but not identical to one I've seen before), and you'll be fine

It is most certainly a bug. I submitted a support case on April 16. Response from support: We have heard reports about this "visual glitch" however, we have not been able to reproduce this in tests.
My support case is still listed as pending.

I've also seen soc mates and friends who crashed, then couldn't get back on and we saw their avatar logging on & off randomly.
Some cases for a couple hours .. some for a couple days..

Eventually, they fixed it, so I hope the same for you (the shorter time frame preferably)
